Con tanto rumor sobre una gran mejora de las cámaras en los inminentes iPhone 13, es lógico que se hable ya de un posible almacenamiento local de 1 TB para el teléfono. Los vídeos que graben las lentes de un iPhone 13 Pro Max pueden ocupar un tamaño monstruoso, y nunca está de mar ofrecer nuevos topes en ese almacenamiento. Aunque ello implique vigilar bien ciertos usos.
Ahora bien: el espacio disponible en iCloud empieza a ser escaso para las copias de seguridad de esos dispositivos incluso ampliados a sus máximos. La copia de un iPhone de 1 TB que se acerque a estar lleno puede complicarle mucho la vida a cualquier Mac con 1 TB de almacenamiento o menos, y ahora mismo lo normal es que se vendan con menos almacenamiento. Enviar la copia a iCloud más o menos lo soluciona, pero quizás podemos hablar de una hipótesis: que iOS sea capaz de hacer copias locales al estilo de Time Machine.
Solucionamos el problema de espacio… pero no el de la energía
Insisto en que esto es una hipótesis. No hablo de rumores, ni filtraciones. Hipótesis, que significa echar a volar nuestra imaginación sobre algo que podría aliviar este problema de los iPhone cuyas copias de seguridad pueden ser tremendamente grandes. A nivel técnico, gracias a las mejoras de las últimas versiones de iOS, es muy posible.
Imagina un iPhone de 1 TB prácticamente lleno y un dueño que, por el motivo que sea, no puede hacer la copia de seguridad ni en iCloud ni en un Mac. Quizás incluso no tiene ordenador, algo muy posible en 2021. Ningún problema: ese dueño tiene un disco duro externo portátil de 4 TB.
Conectas un disco duro al iPhone y haces la copia, pero… ¿aguantará la batería para completarla?
Utilizando un adaptador (mejor no pensamos en un iPhone con puerto USB-C), el usuario el disco al iPhone directamente y abre los Ajustes del terminal. En el menú hay una nueva opción: ‘Copia de Seguridad’. En ella podemos elegir el disco externo que hemos conectado e iniciar una copia local de todos los contenidos. También podemos elegir si cifrar esa copia de seguridad con una contraseña (incluyendo así los datos más delicados como los de Salud) o bien dejarla sin cifrar.
Con esta premisa tenemos varios problemas. Un iPhone no tiene suficiente energía para aguantar un disco duro externo de alta capacidad copiando centenares de GB (tardaría un buen rato). Habría que tenerlo en una base de carga inalámbrica o bien utilizar un adaptador en el que también se le pueda conectar un cable Lightning adicional para poder cargarlo al mismo tiempo. Demasiado incómodo y no podríamos usar el teléfono mientras la copia se hace.
Las alternativas siguen siendo dependientes de otros dispositivos
¿Soluciones o alternativas? Las hay, pero ya nos vamos a soluciones poco entendibles por el usuario general. Los iPhone podrían hacer uso de un disco conectado directamente a una red local y hacer las copias vía Wi-Fi, al estilo Time Capsule. Pero es algo demasiado específico.
Lo más factible es permitir que un iPhone conectado a un Mac pueda hacer copias de seguridad no en un directorio local del sistema como ocurre ahora, si no en un directorio que podamos elegir. Así podríamos decirle que haga esa copia en un disco externo directamente, aunque ya volvemos a depender de un ordenador.
La moraleja que de momento podemos sacar con la tecnología actual es, como ya dije en su día, que un iPhone de 1 TB esconde muchas posibilidades pero también muchas complicaciones si perdemos el control de lo que guardamos en él. Por ese motivo, sigo defendiendo que deberíamos mirar ese TB en nuestros bolsillos con admiración, pero también con prudencia. he visto bases de datos de WhatsApp desatadas, casi de 100 GB, que podrían convertir la migración de un dispositivo a otro en un infierno.
